4. School Student Wins Top Mime Award at State Competition
Maharishi School 10th-grader Essa Johnson recently won the Critics Choice banner, the top award, in the solo mime category at the annual Iowa High School Speech Association All-State Festival.
Competing against top performers from around the state, Ms. Johnson portrayed a mad scientist and brought the audience to its feet when she finished.
³The room just exploded in cheers when she was done,² said Brendan Thomas, who along with Laura and Tati Ticciati coached Ms. Johnson and the other students who participated. ³The judge was blown away by her precision of movement and facial expression.²
Also making it to the final competition and performing at All-State was a choral reading group. And two other groups received honorable mention, the girls acting ensemble and the boys readers theater.
³I was very pleased with all of our entries this year,² Mr. Thomas said.
Eight groups participated overall, with seven getting top scores at the regional competition and going to state, and four of those making it to the final competition at All-State.
This is the third year in the row that Maharishi School mime artists have won the top award, earning the Critics Choice banner for group mime last year and the banner for solo mime the year before.
