Georgia: Ceasefire and Withdrawal Now!
The conflict between Russia and Georgia is dangerously escalating, placing tens of thousands of civilians at risk. As Russian troops take control of much of Georgia, the European Union has proposed a ceasefire and China has called for an "Olympic Truce". Georgia has agreed: all eyes turn to Russia.
The French and Finnish foreign ministers are right now bringing the ceasefire and withdrawal proposal to Moscow -- let’s accompany it with a massive global public outcry urging Russia to agree and withdraw. As soon as we get over 200,000 signatures, we'll publicize the campaign in the media and deliver it to the UN Security Council and Russian government. As citizens of many nations, we call for an immediate ceasefire in Georgia and the full withdrawal of all combat forces. Only a peaceful, negotiated process can resolve this crisis and the status of regions such as South Ossetia - further aggression will only endanger civilians and risk escalation of the conflict.
